Martin Wells was a Welshman who had a
so-so business here in the UK before he
packed up everything and headed for Australia
where he was enormously successful,
exporting his great designs all over the world.
This pair should be in a museum as from the
patent number we found out that it was for
the buried hinge design, applied for in 1961 -
check out the
drawing - and it is the earliest
we have seen. Of course, by the mid-1960's all
of the big frame makers were designing their own
buried hinges on the face of the frame, giving
that clean look that continues to today, but
it seems that Marty Wells was the pioneer in this
area. NB: although never worn, frame marked
down due to very minor faults in plastic at left
side, see close-up photo.
