Birch was a British company who specialised
in this Nylon Supra style. This frame was called
Mirage and dates from 1965. The clear acrylic
bridge and suspended eyepieces allow all the
attention to be drawn to the foxy brows,
upswept from clear through grey to charcoal
and back to clear again down the arms. FYI:
Michael Birch went on to become the first
Western professional artist to specialise in the
Japanese art of Netsuke - minature sculptures.
He has carved in coral, wood, horn,
tusk, antler -
even rhinoceros toenail. He has also used acrylic -
and we know where he cut his teeth on that!
A Michael Birch Netsuke can cost around £2,000...
so his early work that we offer here is a steal.
