  • Cartier the jewellers started in 1899 and in 1904, Louis Cartier was

working with watchmaker Edmond Jaeger to develop the 'Santos',

their first modern watch for men, designed for his friend the Brazilian

aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont. The airman wanted to be able to tell

the time while he was flying. By 1911 it was produced for sale to the

public. In 1978, the 'Santos' watch in gold and steel was introduced,

with its framing of tiny jeweller's screws, and became a design landmark.

In 1983, Cartier launched both their 'Must' and 'Vendome' spectacles

and this is the spectacle design 'Santos' - seen here in a 1985 adver-

. The aviator shape continues the tribute to Alberto Santos-

Dumont and on the bridge and hinges are the iconic jeweller's screws in

gold on steel, from the 'Santos' watch design. This is 22ct gold-plated,

made by the world's greatest jewellers and probably the ultimate luxury

eyewear for men. It is exceptional to find a never worn pair and with its

original Cartier display lenses. Perhaps you'll feel as Christopher Walken

did in 1985 when he first put them as Max Zorin in the James Bond film,

    A View To A Kill
. We think the size we have - 56mm lenses - may be

smaller than Zorin's but we're not sure, and he either had two pairs: as

sunglasses and glasses but it's more likely that it was the one Santos,

fitted with prescription photochromic lenses which darken in the sunlight.

These glasses were only made until the mid-1990's and their rarity, value

and quality have made them one of the top collectables in men's vintage

eyewear. And as a men's accessory. Superb.
