  • For an American tv series that only ran between 1975 and 1978

plus a few feature-length movies, Kojak was a huge global

success. Much of the appeal came from the New York locations

and the idiosyncratic cop character played by Telly Savalas -

accessorised by hats, lollipops and sunglasses. Savalas chose his

bald head - keeping on shaving it after an earlier role - and he

also wore glasses, so he knew the power and charisma of that

look with his style. No doubt he brought this to the tv series and it

proved wildly popular. These sunglasses are branded 'Kojak' but

we don't know if they were licensed merchandise. These were

also early days for licensing. But we have had a pair before -

only one other in 15 years though - and it was exactly the same.

They also look very like a pair that Savalas wore as "Kojak".

Not difficult to see why they went for this design from their Seventies

superstar: a large format gold-tone metal frame with a textured,

brushed effect on the bridge and most strikingly, shimmering glass

lenses with light rainbow-hued gradient mirror coating. Glass lenses

like these would be impossibly expensive now, but here they are in

an accessible vintage accessory from an iconic tv show. Now you

just have to say: "Who loves ya baby?"                                                        — klasik
