info
The classic eighties pair of sunglasses? Perhaps
helped by their appearance in both
The Blues Brothers
(1980) worn by John Belushi and later in
Risky Business
(1983) worn by Tom Cruise. They were actually designed
by
Baush & Lomb in 1954 who continued to make them
until they sold the company to Luxottica in 1999. They
changed - for the worse, ioho - over the years but in
the 80s they simply had the lozenge plaques to identify
them and the discreet BL etching on the lens. Not many
knew that they came in two sizes, this pair the larger
(rarer) 24 bridge size. The more common bridge size
was the 22mm which didn't actually fit a lot of noses.
And this pair found never having been worn - so even
rarer. Luxottica remain the owners of the Ray-Ban brand
and still sell a Wayfarer today, but of course they
haven't got the Bausch & Lomb lenses - and someone
even told us that the original lozenge plaque is no
longer integral to the hinge, it is merely a glued on
piece of decoration. Indeed!
