info
Victory Optical was founded in 1941 by Vincent Salierno in
Newark, NJ. He went on to design some of the best frames
and sunglasses of the mid-20th century in America.
Here is
an ad of theirs from 1949 which is similar in style to ours in
that it shows a men's and women's pair in two-tone. The top
half of ours being a vertical wood grain effect complete with
pyrographic effects adding to the wood-look. This continues
down each arm. Then the rest of the frame is clear, unusual
for sunglasses. Perhaps it was made as an optical frame but
has subsequently been fitted with sunglasses lenses. This
shade of green was very popular 1940s/50s, so they look con-
temporary for the period. And they are very good, offering
maximum sun protection as you would expect from one of
the top makers at the time.
Victory Optical was relaunched some 15 years ago by the
grandsons of Vincent Salierno and we would have offered a
link to their website but recently the link has stopped working
and we note that their FB page hasn't been added to for a
while, so perhaps they are in a hiatus.
NB: although no maker's mark on the frame, the V sheilds on
the front are as good as a signature: many Victory frames
used these - see above ad.
