  • Silhouette started in 1964 and are still going today

They always made incredible sunglasses - in particular

their famous Futura range in the early 1970's.

Before this though, in 1973, Silhouette introduced

their 'new metal eyewear with coloured frames' -

also from designer Dora Demmel. New technologies

meant lighter metal frames and therefore sunglasses

could size up - the early Seventies average being

62mm lens diameter, growing to 70mm by the end

of the decade. These are only 58mm so a moderate

size from what is probably the late 1970's when they

started adding enamel inserts to the thin metal. This

838 though makes more decorative use of the metal

in the front extra top bar, like butterfly antennae,

while the colour is restricted to the enamel copper-

coloured infill on the sides and to the light green

lenses. Although we found this pair never having been

worn and in an original slip case (included), it has

minor light surface marks on the lenses which have

    marked it down.
