  • The Gucci story begins in 1920 when founder, Guccio Gucci,

opened a saddlery and luggage shop in Florence, later adding

handbags and accessories. The Gucci website says that Guccio

was, "...inspired by London, and the refined aesthetic of English

nobility he had witnessed while working in the Savoy Hotel."

Well, Klasik is not in the Savoy, but we are in London and our

natural nobility - in matters optical - recognises the heritage

and the refinement in this example of Gucci's eyewear, made

in Italy just over 60 years later. The equestrian origins of this

now grand fashion house are evident in the golden metal

elements with their 'horse bit' motif at the centre and the green

and red inlaid stripes, which lead down both arms to the raised

Gucci logos. The red and green colours were inspired by the

webbing strap used to attach a saddle to a horse and first

appeared on Gucci's luggage in the early 1950's. The lovely

dark tortoiseshell acetate is a perfect companion and you'll note

that the eyepieces echo the shape of the iconic Gucci horse bit.

Gucci were producing their magnificent - and expensive -

sunglasses in the early 1980's: it was not until 1988 that Safilo

became their manufacturer. This pair is likely to date from the

Gucci days and so is redolent of the great and rather lovely

things about this luxury Italian brand.
